Out of Body

Artist Statement

Out of body investigates the phenomenon that occurs when you shift human perception away from the eyes. The experience of stepping out of ones body can invoke a spiritual, emotional or out of this world sensation which can affect a persons understanding of themselves and create a deeper appreciation of their existence.

When looking back at the history of the development of virtual reality (VR) technology, or more specifically the aesthetic of VR technology we found it interesting how the interaction between the user and the real world has never really been considered. There always seems to be this disconnect between the user their surroundings. Upon embarking on this project we set our goals to challenge our everyday experience of the world and create a system that changes or manipulates sensory input. We choose to experiment with vision and sound as these together, we feel influence our interaction with the world the most. Materials and technology system components evolved into functions of work as our project began to unfold. To enable this opportunity our team of four constructed an extension of the body reaching out behind the user streaming live camera feed to a virtual reality headset. The system remains attached to the body to allow for movement wherever the user might want to go.
